Award for Innovation
Dr. Campbell is Professor of Physical Chemistry at Edinburgh University who in 2010 was awarded a Fellowship in the Royal Society for her contribution to the understanding of relaxation channels and reorganisational dynamics of highly excited molecules and surfaces through experimental research.
Dr. Campbell was born and schooled on the Isle of Bute and completed her first degree and doctorate at Edinburgh University before receiving a Habilitation in experimental physics from Freiburg University in Germany.
After her time as assistant professor at Freiburg University, she moved on to become the departmental head at the Max-Born-Institut in Berlin. Then in 1998 Eleanor was made Chair of Atomic and Molecular Physics at Gothenburg University, Sweden before returning to Edinburgh University to take up the post as Chair of Physical Chemistry in 2007 and then Chemistry 2013.
Dr Campbell is a world recognised scientist and a great Scot and most deservedly the recipient of the 2015 Baird of Bute Society Scottish Innovation Award for her innovative contributions to Chemistry.
Dr. Gordon McConnell.
In 2008 Gordon McConnell received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the West of Scotland honouring a lifetime of contribution to aviation which very impressively culminated with his being Chief Engineer of the Airbus A350.
Gordon, who graduated the University in the 1970s with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, joined Scottish Aviation Ltd at Prestwick in 1975 as a Stress Engineer and following the creation of British Aerospace, he progressed through various roles in the Engineering Department to become Chief Engineer responsible for the Jetstream 41 development programme.
Following a number of key posts at British Aerospace, Gordon joined Airbus Industrie in Toulouse as Chief Engineer, Twin Aisle Aircraft in 1997. In this post he managed the overall engineering of the A340-500/600 ultra-long range aircraft development programme, which culminated in a successful entry to service in 2002.
He returned to the UK to become Senior Vice President, Engineering at Airbus Filton in 2004 before he returned to Toulouse in 2007 to lead the engineering of the new Airbus A350XWB long range aircraft family.
Gordon recently retired from Airbus and lives with his wife at his home in Ayr.
Dr. Gordon McConnell has made a very significant contribution to the aeronautical industry both in the UK and overseas and I am delighted to announce him as the recipient of the 2015 Baird of Bute Society Scottish Award for Aviation.
Awards will be presented at the Baird Society Annual Awards Dinner in Rothesay on September 11th, 2015 by the Society's Patron,

" To Inspire to Aspire" - Society's focus on youth
Daily Mail, May 18, 2011
Young Give up on Life
"One in five young Scots has given up on fulfilling their goals in life, new research reveals. Thousands of 16 to 24 year-olds have abandoned all hope for their future - with many believing they will end up living on state benefits. Others say they can only look forward to dead-end jobs, illustrating the rising despair among jobless Scots amid soaring long-term youth unemployment".
